Scaling Climate Action with Biochar in Greater Klang Valley
Project Overview
Welcome to the Greater Klang Valley Biochar Project where farm waste gets a second life and carbon goes back to the ground where it belongs. Tucked inside Malaysia’s lush Greater Klang Valley hills, this project flips the script on waste by woody wastes from the world’s largest organic plantation into something magical, biochar. Our signature “Pit-to-Plot” approach keeps things refreshingly simple, no fancy machines, no complex reactors, just good old-fashioned pyrolysis right in the soil. Each pit becomes a tiny carbon factory, transforming what used to be burned waste into long-lived carbon storage while boosting soil fertility and water retention. Together, they capture up to 1,200 tonnes of CO₂ a year, proving that small, local actions can punch way above their weight. What makes it even cooler? Every site double as a living lab, where farmers, researchers, and nature itself are all part of the experiment. Audited by CERES-CERT AG and registered under Carbon Standards International, this isn’t just Malaysia’s first artisanal biochar project to issue verified carbon credits, it’s a blueprint for how climate action can be simple, circular, and downright beautiful.

Simple Yet Impactful
Our ‘Pit-to-Plot’ approach keeps things refreshingly simple.
By transforming local farm waste into carbon-storing biochar right where it’s produced, directly in the soil using low-tech pyrolysis pits, we enable climate action that’s affordable, replicable, and community-driven.
Energy efficiency:
Low-input, high-output method requiring no fossil fuels, relying solely on controlled pyrolysis of on-site biomass.
Net CDR-to-feedstock ratio:
1:5 meaning for every 5 tonnes of woody waste, 1 tonne of stable carbon is sequestered. This ensures low operational costs and high scalability for distributed rural systems.
Living Lab Environment:
Our site and partner smallholder farms act as real-world testbeds, where biochar is produced, applied, and monitored under actual field conditions.
Latest soil results:
-
+15–25% increase in soil organic carbon
-
+20% improvement in moisture retention within one cropping cycle
-
Reduced fertilizer dependency and improved crop resilience
Carbon capture data:
Each soil pit yields biochar that locks away an estimated 2–3 tonnes of CO₂e per hectare, depending on feedstock composition and burn conditions.
MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, Verification):
Reclimate employs hybrid MRV combining:
-
On-ground sampling and lab soil testing
-
Remote sensing for biomass and land-use tracking
-
Data integration through Reclimate’s adaptive MRV system improving accuracy as more sites join the network
Impact & Benefit
Environmental Impact
Reclimate’s Klang Valley pilot diverts woody plantation waste and urban landscaping residues from open burning converting them into long-lived carbon sinks.
The project currently removes 800–1,000 tonnes CO₂e per year, while restoring soil fertility and water retention across nearby agricultural plots.
Scientific Advancement
The site doubles as a regional testbed for biochar research and agronomic trials in collaboration with soil scientists, universities, and carbon accounting partners.
Data collected contributes to Malaysia’s emerging evidence base for nature-based carbon removal solutions.
Community Benefits
Local job creation in waste collection, pit construction, and soil application.
Training for farmers, students, and researchers in biochar practices.
New micro-enterprises within the circular bioeconomy, strengthening local livelihoods and awareness of regenerative agriculture
Simplicity Drives Scale
Regional Scale Potential
If expanded across available woody waste streams in the Klang Valley, this model could offset up to 50,000 tonnes CO₂e annually, reducing emissions from waste burning and landfill accumulation.
Modular & Replicable Design
The system’s low-tech, pit-based structure is;
Scalable
Fits farms of any size
Adaptable
Works with various feedstocks (plantation waste, garden trimmings, crop residues)
Accessible
Requires minimal training and equipment investment
This modular design enables Reclimate to deploy decentralized carbon removal hubs throughout Malaysia, a pathway toward climate-positive agriculture at scale.
