Our Solutions

Towards a carbon-negative future

Biochar

The Humble Black Gold

Avoiding and stopping emissions alone aren’t enough. We need to permanently remove the emissions from the sky and the time is NOW. At Reclimate, we are actively exploring ways to sequester carbon, and the hero we chose is Biochar, an ancient yet humble black gold which holds the key to breath live back to our soil. So here’s the gist, biochar is what happens when you take all the waste and residues and instead of burning it (and creating haze), you slow-cook it with very low oxygen. Science calls it pyrolysis, but basically it’s a smarter, cleaner and smokeless way of making charcoal. What you end up with is this beautiful, black, carbon-rich material that can literally trap carbon for hundreds of years. Biochar is like, “Nah, I’m staying underground.” The process isn’t new either. Indigenous farmers in the Amazon were doing it thousands of years ago, creating “terra preta” or black earth which makes their soil so fertile it still feeds people today. Modern science only recently caught up to what they already knew, and that is you can turn waste into something that heals both soil and climate. When you add biochar to soil, the land just wakes up. It transforms tired, nutrient-poor dirt into living, breathing ecosystems. Because of its porous structure, biochar acts like a sponge. It holds onto nutrients and water that would otherwise wash away, creating a home for beneficial microbes that supercharge soil health. Plants grow stronger, roots dig deeper, and farmers start noticing the difference almost immediately. In the field, that looks like 30% - 60% percent higher yields, crops that need up to half as much fertilizer, and soil that stays moist longer even under the blazing sun. For smallholder farmers, especially those working on marginal land, that’s not just better soil, that’s food security, resilience, and dignity. But the beauty of biochar doesn’t end underground. It’s also a carbon removal powerhouse. Each tonne of biochar can lock away between 1-2 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent and it stays there for hundreds, sometimes thousands of years. Moreover, biochar’s carbon storage is verifiable, measurable, and permanent. The best part of it, it scales naturally through farmers, forests, and communities, to breath life back to our earth together.
