Project Overview
The Borneo Biochar initiative, established in January 2026 in Marak Parak, Sabah, represents a forward-looking model for carbon removal and sustainable development in Malaysia. More than a technical solution, the project embodies a circular economy approach—transforming wood waste into a high-value climate asset while addressing local environmental and socio-economic challenges. Through advanced processing, agricultural residues are converted into premium biochar with an exceptional 90% fixed carbon content. This enables durable carbon sequestration, with verified permanence exceeding 1,000 years, ensuring that each tonne of the 900+ tCO₂e removed annually contributes to long-term climate stability. The project aligns with global best practices in high-integrity carbon removal, delivering measurable and lasting environmental impact. At its core, Borneo Biochar is deeply rooted in community empowerment. The project proudly employs 100% local workforce participation, with team members drawn from surrounding rural and indigenous communities. By creating accessible, skilled green jobs, it provides meaningful economic opportunities—particularly for youth and indigenous groups—while reducing the need for rural-to-urban migration. This inclusive model ensures that the benefits of the global carbon economy are equitably shared with those closest to the land. Beyond carbon removal, the initiative delivers tangible environmental co-benefits. The biochar produced is applied directly to local soils, often enhanced with organic compost, to restore degraded and acidic land conditions. This intervention significantly improves soil fertility, supports higher agricultural productivity, and strengthens long-term food security across rural Sabah. In doing so, the project closes the loop between waste management, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable agriculture. Transparency and credibility are central to the project’s design. Operations are continuously monitored through an independent, CSI-accredited digital Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (dMRV) system, ensuring traceability and accountability at every stage. The project has earned recognition from leading international bodies, including ICROA, Sylvera, and Carbon Standards International, and adheres to the Artisan C-SINK methodology—a benchmark for high-quality, nature-based carbon removal. As a flagship initiative, Borneo Biochar demonstrates how localized solutions can deliver global impact—advancing climate action, empowering communities, and contributing to multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, from poverty alleviation to environmental restoration.

Simple Yet Impactful
Our ‘Pit-to-Plot’ approach keeps things refreshingly simple.
By transforming local farm waste into carbon-storing biochar right where it’s produced, directly in the soil using low-tech pyrolysis pits, we enable climate action that’s affordable, replicable, and community-driven.
Energy efficiency:
Low-input, high-output method requiring no fossil fuels, relying solely on controlled pyrolysis of on-site biomass.
Net CDR-to-feedstock ratio:
1:5 meaning for every 5 tonnes of agriculture waste, 1 tonne of stable carbon is sequestered. This ensures low operational costs and high scalability for distributed rural systems.
Living Lab Environment:
Our site and partner smallholder farms act as real-world testbeds, where biochar is produced, applied, and monitored under actual field conditions.
Expected soil results:
-
+15–25% increase in soil organic carbon
-
+20% improvement in moisture retention within one cropping cycle
-
Up to 50% reduced fertiliser dependency and improved crop resilience
Carbon capture data:
Each soil pit yields biochar that locks away an estimated 2–3 tonnes of CO₂e per batch, depending on feedstock composition and burn conditions.
dMRV (digital Monitoring, Reporting, Verification):
Reclimate employs a hybrid DMRV combining:
-
On-ground sampling and lab soil testing
-
Remote sensing for biomass and land-use tracking
-
Data monitoring to ensure high transparency and accountability
Impact & Benefit
Environmental Impact
This project converts cassava residues and wood waste from local farms into stable carbon-rich biochar.
The project is expected to remove approximately 900 tonnes of CO₂e annually, while improving soil fertility and water retention.
Scientific Advancement
The borneo sites serve as field testbeds for biochar applications in cassava-based farming systems.
Data generated supports research collaborations and contributes to Malaysia’s growing evidence base for practical carbon removal solutions.
Community Benefits
Local farmers are trained to operate and manage biochar pits, creating employment and building technical skills within the community. The project supports rural livelihoods, with 100% local employment rates, promoting rural green job creation and regenerative farming practices in Sabah.

Simplicity Drives Scale
Regional Scale Potential
If replicated across cassava plantations and other agricultural farms in Sabah, this approach could remove thousands of tonnes of CO₂e annually while creating jobs and strengthening local regenerative agriculture systems.
Modular & Replicable Design
The system’s low-tech, pit-based structure is;
Scalable - Fits farms of any size
Adaptable - Works with various feedstocks (plantation waste, garden trimmings, crop residues)
Accessible - Requires minimal training and equipment investment
This modular design enables Reclimate to deploy decentralized carbon removal hubs throughout Malaysia,
a pathway toward climate-positive agriculture at scale.
